Gene wins games by making one target stand in the wrong place. His chip damage controls space, but the real threat is the pull that gives his team a clean elimination.
Quick Verdict
Choose Gene when your team needs a safe controller, a gem carrier, or a single-target playmaker. He suits patient players who track enemy movement and wait for a high-value pull instead of forcing every opportunity.
Story and Personality
Officially, Gene is a magical being associated with a lamp. His attack spreads after travelling, while his Super reaches out and pulls an enemy directly to him.
Fan theory: Some fans imagine the lamp as the source of Gene’s personality and power. The game presents the magical theme clearly, but detailed origin stories shared by fans are not confirmed lore.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
- Wide split shots check bushes and interrupt healing over a large area.
- A successful Super can instantly turn a three-on-three into a winning fight.
- His support tools protect nearby teammates and stabilise a control composition.
Weaknesses
- Low finishing pressure at maximum range can allow opponents to recover.
- A missed pull wastes a long build-up and may expose Gene.
- Tanks and assassins can punish him if they survive the pull at close range.
Best Modes and Maps
Gene excels in Gem Grab, Knockout, and Bounty-style elimination play. Select him on open or semi-open maps with a few walls for safe peeking and clear pull lanes. Hard Rock Mine-type control layouts and open Knockout lanes suit him; dense wall mazes and constant tank pressure reduce his reach.
Best Build
For coordinated 3v3 play, equip Lamp Blowout, Magic Puffs, Talk to the Hand, and Vision. Gene can scout, sustain nearby teammates, and threaten a longer pull while retaining an answer to assassins. Use Vengeful Spirits on very open maps without dive pressure, and replace Vision with Shield or Damage when bushes are unimportant.
Gear 1 — Talk to the Hand
Extend the reach of Gene’s Magic Hand.
Why it works: Gene’s Super is his strongest conversion tool. The extra reach creates pulls from positions opponents may consider safe and lets Gene threaten an objective without walking into unnecessary danger.
Gear 2 — Vision
Reveal enemies for 2 seconds after damaging them.
Why it works: Gene’s split projectiles are excellent for checking a wide area. Vision turns light chip damage into team information and makes it harder for an enemy to hide before Gene prepares a pull.
Situational Gear alternatives: Use Shield on open maps where surviving the first sniper exchange matters most. Damage adds finishing power when Vision provides little value; Speed is useful when bushes form the main approach routes.
Build Options: Gadgets, Star Powers & Hypercharge
Gene’s choices depend on whether he needs protection from aggression, help finishing distant targets, or additional team sustain. The default 3v3 setup favours Lamp Blowout and Magic Puffs.
Gadget — Lamp Blowout
Gene pushes away nearby enemies. If at least one enemy Brawler is in range, Gene also restores 10% of his maximum Health. Cooldown: 20 seconds.
When to use it: Choose it against assassins, tanks, and other short-range pressure. It can interrupt a dive, protect a teammate, or create safe spacing after a pull; hold it until the enemy commits.
Gadget — Vengeful Spirits
Gene fires a homing missile at every visible enemy within a large area, dealing up to 1,600 damage depending on distance. Cooldown: 20 seconds.
When to use it: Pick it on open Bounty or Knockout maps when the enemy has little dive threat. It works as extra long-range pressure to finish weakened opponents, but walls and hidden enemies reduce its value.
Star Power — Magic Puffs
Gene continuously heals nearby friendly Brawlers.
When to use it: This is the general 3v3 choice. Stay close enough to sustain teammates between exchanges without stacking so tightly that one enemy attack hits the whole team.
Star Power — Spirit Slap
Gene’s Magic Hand also damages enemies for 2,000 damage when it connects.
When to use it: Choose it when immediate pull damage secures eliminations more reliably than passive healing, especially in modes without teammates or when your composition already has enough sustain. Avoid letting the damage tempt you into pulling a tank directly onto Gene.
Hypercharge — Hyper Hands
Gene’s Super splits into three hands: one travels straight and two travel diagonally, with each hand able to grab an enemy.
When to use it: Activate it when several enemies are grouped and your team can punish every pull, or when the wider spread makes catching one priority target more likely. Avoid firing through a tank-heavy formation if pulling several enemies would overwhelm Gene and his teammates.
Best Teammates
Max’s speed helps Gene find an angle and makes a pulled target easier for the team to surround. Sandy’s concealment hides Gene’s exact pull position, and Magic Puffs supports both teammates during slow control fights.
Counters and Common Mistakes
Aggressive tanks, spawnables, and mobile assassins can block or survive the pull. Do not auto-aim through pets, pull a healthy tank onto your own damage dealers, or stand so far behind teammates that Magic Puffs provides no value.
