VALORANT Patch 12.08: Skirmish Ascension, Ascent Returns, and Kuronami 2.0

Riot Games has officially kicked off Season 2026: Act 3 with the launch of Patch 12.08. This update shifts the focus toward pure mechanical skill with a brand-new experimental ranked mode and the return of a fan-favorite map to the competitive rotation.

At a Glance:

  • New Mode: Skirmish: Ascension (1v1 and 2v2 Ranked Dueling)
  • Map Rotation: Ascent is IN; Bind is OUT
  • New Collection: Kuronami 2.0 (Phantom, Ghost, Operator, Guardian, and Melee)
  • Platform Update: Premier Stage V26A3 officially returns for PC

1. New Mode: Skirmish – Ascension

Riot has answered the call for a dedicated competitive dueling environment. Skirmish: Ascension is a skill-forward ranked experience designed to test raw aim and tactical utility usage in a fast-paced format.

  • The Format: Available in 1v1 and 2v2 queues with independent leaderboards hosted on the FTW platform.
  • Staged Weapons: There is no economy management. Weapons automatically upgrade as the match progresses:
    • Rounds 1–4: Pistols (Bandit and Sheriff).
    • Rounds 5–8: Mid-tier Rifles (Guardian and Bulldog).
    • Rounds 9+: High-tier Rifles (Vandal and Phantom).
  • Agent Pool: Choose from a curated list of 14 Agents, each equipped with exactly one signature ability (e.g., Jett’s Tailwind, Omen’s Shrouded Step, or Sage’s Barrier Orb).
  • Victory Condition: The first player or duo to reach 10 rounds wins the match.

2. Map Pool Rotation: Ascent Returns

With the start of Act 3, the competitive and deathmatch map pools have been updated to refresh the tactical meta.

  • Returning: Ascent has officially rotated back into the active Competitive and Deathmatch queues.
  • Leaving: Bind has been rotated out for the foreseeable future.
  • Current Pool: Abyss, Ascent, Breeze, Corrode, Pearl, Haven, and Split.

3. The Kuronami 2.0 Collection

The popular water-themed Kuronami line returns with a fresh set of weapons and an all-new melee experience.

  • Included Weapons: Phantom, Ghost, Operator, and Guardian.
  • The Melee: The Naru-Kami, a transforming Chained Kunai/Sword with custom level-up animations.
  • Pricing: The complete bundle is available for US$95.00 (approx. 9,500 VP), featuring unique finishers and elemental effects.

4. Premier Stage V26A3

For aspiring pro teams, the new Premier stage is officially back.

  • Enrollment: Teams must register within the client.
  • Match Schedule: Weekly matches run for six weeks, every Saturday from May 9 through June 13, 2026.
  • Playoffs: Scheduled for June 20 and 21, 2026, with a multi-day format for advancing teams.

5. Critical Bug Fixes

Patch 12.08 also resolves several persistent issues to ensure a smoother competitive experience:

  • Viper/Veto Interaction: Fixed a bug where Viper’s Toxic Screen SFX would loop infinitely when Veto entered it with Evolution active.
  • Sage Resurrections: Fixed an issue where players resurrected inside Viper’s decay clouds wouldn’t properly receive the decay debuff.
  • Technical Fixes: Resolved an issue where audio sliders in the settings menu were not moving correctly on PC.
