A Cursed Kingdom with an Empty Stomach

A ravenous curse has transformed the creatures of the British Isles into the titular Hungry Horrors. With no prince arriving to save the day, a proudly spoiled princess has to leave her comfortable life behind and break the curse herself—one carefully prepared meal at a time.

The setup gives the game a playful storybook personality, but the legends behind its monsters are real. Jenny Greenteeth, the Dullahan, Queen Mab and many more figures appear alongside regional dishes drawn from English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh cooking. The result is a world that feels funny and welcoming without sanding away the stranger edges of its folklore.

Core Gameplay Features

1. Build a Culinary Deck

Every card represents something the princess can serve. You collect ingredients, unlock recipes and season cards to alter their flavours or trigger stronger effects. Cookware changes the rules of an encounter, while artefacts, potions, familiars and fishing rewards give each run more ways to evolve.

  • Build around authentic dishes such as Cranachan, Yorkshire Pudding and Toad in the Hole.
  • Use seasoning and cookware to reshape cards and reinforce a chosen strategy.
  • Carry unlocked recipes, abilities and upgrades forward through the story campaign.

2. Feed Monsters Instead of Fighting Them

Hungry Horrors replaces swords and spells with appetite management. Dishes fall into five flavour families—salty, sour, savoury, bitter and sweet—and each Horror has cravings, favourites and foods it dislikes. Chaining the right flavours builds momentum and fills a creature’s hunger meter; a poor serving can waste a turn while the monster keeps advancing.

  • Study each Horror’s preferences before committing valuable cards.
  • Build flavour chains that make later dishes increasingly effective.
  • Adapt the deck as new biomes introduce different ingredients and appetites.

3. Choose Campaign or Banquet Mode

Version 1.0 serves a full story-driven Campaign with persistent progression across eight biomes, 34 folklore Horrors, 62 dishes and 13 legendary characters. Players who want a harsher challenge can switch to Banquet, a shorter roguelike mode where permadeath makes every card choice matter. Campaign also offers difficulty options and stackable modifiers, letting players tune the experience after learning the basics.

Hungry Horrors Roguelite Deckbuilder: Who Is It For?

This is an inviting choice for players who enjoy deck construction but want something warmer and stranger than another combat-focused dungeon run. Its colourful pixel art and comic heroine keep the mood light, while the flavour system still rewards planning, memory and careful sequencing. Fans of folklore, traditional food and unconventional card games should find plenty to chew on.

If the idea of solving problems without conventional combat appeals to you, our feature on Worlds Upon the Wind explores another unusual roguelite deckbuilder.

Pro Tip

Plan the chain before serving the first dish. Check a Horror’s cravings and hatreds, then arrange several compatible flavours rather than playing the strongest card immediately. A modest opening dish that begins the right sequence can create far more hunger pressure than an isolated high-value meal—and it keeps the rare cards available for an emergency.
