GRAIN ROT sends you and up to three friends down a cursed elevator into shifting underground ruins, piloting wooden bodies that splinter, collapse, and catch fire at the worst possible moment. This co-op extraction horror builder on Steam blends survival horror with physics-driven chaos and a persistent base you rebuild between runs. Your teammates are your lifeline — right up until one of them punts your soul out of your own body for a laugh.

The Concept
The world above has burned. You are a Living Spark, a spirit that cannot touch anything on its own and so must possess fragile wooden vessels to get any work done. Those vessels are, unfortunately, extremely flammable. When one breaks, you do not die — your Spark pops loose and drifts through the dark, guiding your crew while you hunt for a new host before you fade out entirely.
The loop is a descent. Ride the elevator down into procedurally shifting ruins, smash furniture for materials, feed the good stuff into the Grinder for gold, and get back to the surface before the Corrupted catch you. Everything you haul home goes into rebuilding the Outpost, which in turn lets you afford to go deeper next time. If the entire team breaks, the run’s loot is gone.
Core Gameplay Features
1. Vessel Possession
Death is a change of scenery rather than a game over, and that reframes every risky decision.
- Possess and swap between wooden vessels, each with its own abilities
- Stay in the run as a Spark after your body breaks
- Force your way into a new host before you fade out
2. Physics-Driven Chaos
This is the part that made the demo go viral. Almost everything is interactive, including your friends.
- Dropkick enemies — or “accidentally” launch an ally’s Spark out of their vessel
- Smash furniture into resources, or block a corridor with it
- Tactical carpentry: build barricades on the fly with what you tear down
- Cursed emotes for maximum friend-group damage
3. The Rot and the Outpost
Going deeper pays better and costs more, and the game makes that trade explicit.
- The deeper you descend, the worse the Rot gets — bodies warp, voices distort
- Corrupted vessels react unpredictably to sound, movement, and each other
- Rescue survivors trapped in the Deep Layers
- Persistent Outpost upgrades, interactive furniture, and stat boosts between runs
Who Is This For?
If your Discord group has already burned through Lethal Company and R.E.P.O., GRAIN ROT is the obvious next stop — it has the same blend of genuine tension and self-inflicted disaster, with a base-building layer that gives you something to show for a bad night. It supports online co-op for up to four players, and it does have a single-player mode, though the design clearly wants a crew. Reviews are sitting at Very Positive, and at under ten dollars it is an easy sell for a group buy.
Pro Tip
Fire is the real enemy, not the Corrupted. Your vessel is wood, the environment burns, and a panicked fight next to a lit hazard will end a run faster than any monster. Fight in open space where you can back off, and agree on an extraction depth with your team before you descend — greed is what wipes the whole squad and loses the haul. A Spark with no vessel left is still useful, so keep scouting for your teammates instead of hovering by the elevator.
