Angels Fall First Hits 1.0: 11 Years in Early Access, Finally Complete

Angels Fall First just wrapped up one of Steam’s longest Early Access journeys, hitting 1.0 after more than a decade of development. This sci-fi combined-arms wargame on Steam mashes together classic Battlefront-style infantry combat with fully pilotable capital ships and space dogfights — if you’ve ever wanted to spawn in your crew quarters, launch a fighter, and board an enemy flagship all without a loading screen, this is the game that finally delivers it.

The Story / Concept

Set during the Second Antarean War between the Antarean Empire and the United League of Planets, Angels Fall First is built around a simple but rarely-achieved dream: uniting large-scale space battles with close-quarters infantry combat in one seamless experience. Command a battleship from the bridge, launch fighters into a dogfight, or drop into a firefight as ground infantry — all without leaving the same match. The team has been building this universe since 2005, starting as an award-winning Unreal Tournament 3 mod before evolving into a standalone game, and the 1.0 launch brings a decade of community feedback and content into one polished (if still charmingly rough around the edges) package.

Core Gameplay Features

  1. Combined-Arms Combat — Fight across every scale of warfare in a single match.
    • Fly starfighters and pilot capital ships
    • Drive ground vehicles and fight on foot
    • Board and sabotage enemy ships from the inside
  2. Deep Customization — Build a loadout that matches your playstyle.
    • Customizable infantry, vehicle, and spacecraft loadouts
    • Weapon modifications ranging from bunker-buster launchers to personal shields
    • Light or heavy infantry suits for different combat approaches
  3. Full AI & Multiplayer Support — Play the way you want, with or without other people.
    • Up to 64 players, with bots able to fill any role
    • Offline play and co-op-style matches against bots
    • Commander mode for issuing squad orders from a tactical overview map

Who Is This For?

Fans of team-based tactical shooters who’ve always wished for more scale — think Battlefield or Star Wars: Battlefront crossed with the vastness of a space sim — will find a lot to love here. It’s also a great pick for players who enjoy offline or bot-supported play, since AI can fill in for any role if you don’t have a full lobby.

Pro Tip

New to AFF? Use the extensive tutorial and practice arenas added for the 1.0 launch before jumping into a live match — they cover everything from basic infantry movement to capital ship piloting, and the practice arenas let you experiment without taking damage.
