Paralives – The Indie Life Sim That Finally Lets You Build Without Limits

Paralives has arrived on Steam Early Access, and after seven years of development the indie life sim from Montreal’s Paralives Studio is finally letting players build homes, shape lives, and tell stories in the open-world town of Melino. Built from scratch as a community-driven alternative to The Sims, this PC and Mac title blends grid-free construction with deep character customization and an open neighbourhood you can actually walk through.

The Story / Concept

Paralives drops you into Melino, a fully open-world neighbourhood complete with shops, parks, restaurants, museums, and other residents going about their lives. You create Parafolks — the game’s take on controllable characters — using a granular body-shape slider system that goes well beyond what mainstream life sims typically offer. From there it’s classic life-sim territory with a fresh coat of indie paint: find work, forge relationships, raise a family, and grow old, all in a living town that feels alive around you.

The studio’s founding promise was no paid DLC, ever. Every update through the full 1.0 release will be free for anyone who buys in at any point during Early Access — a commitment that distinguishes Paralives sharply from the expansion-heavy competition.

Core Gameplay Features

  1. Grid-Free Building
    • Place curved walls, split-level floors, and adjustable ceilings without snapping to a grid
    • Resize, recolor, and fully customize every furniture item directly in Build Mode
    • Steam Workshop integration lets you download community-made houses from day one
  2. Paramaker Character Creator
    • Continuous body-shape sliders with no preset body types
    • Personality traits, skills, wants, needs, and emotions all feed into how Parafolks interact
    • Multiselect groups of Parafolks and direct them as a unit
  3. Open-World Live Mode
    • Walk anywhere in Melino — no loading screens between lots
    • Flexible career progression, social events, and town activities
    • In-game modding interface for adding or editing content without leaving the game

Who Is This For?

Paralives is aimed squarely at life-sim fans who have grown frustrated with paid expansion packs and want a more flexible, community-focused alternative. If you enjoy spending hours in character creators, obsessing over house layouts, or weaving long narrative arcs through virtual lives, this is built for you. The Early Access build is feature-complete enough for a satisfying session, though the studio is clear that content will continue to grow over approximately two years before the full 1.0 release.

Pro Tip

Before diving into Live Mode, spend time in the Paramaker to set meaningful personality traits and skills — these directly shape what interactions and career paths are available to your Parafolk once they’re out in the world. Rushing past character creation leaves your sim feeling generic.
